Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to Lisbon and welcome to the 16th World Congress of Psycho -Oncology and Psychosocial Academy.
This year we are celebrating our 30th anniversary and have prepared a very exciting congresso under the main theme: Integrating Psycho-Oncology into mainstream cancer care: from research to action.
We will be discussing new perspectives in clinical care, new data from research, innovative educational programs, advocacy, organizational issues and cancer policies. We have invited outstanding professionals from various discipline and organizations to partner with us in the discussion of how to deliver best possible integrated cancer care for the whole person and how to improve cancer policies accordingly. Research has evidenced that integrating the psychosocial dimension in cancer care improves patients clinical outcomes. Nowadays quality cancer care demand the inclusion of psychosocial care. It is time to put evidence and recommendations into action and to move forward for better cancer policies that address the whole person and incorporate their psychosocial needs into their treatment plans. Psychosocial care is a human right.
Portuguese navigators in the XV century have crossed unknown seas and oceans to reach out for new continents, new cultures and people, opening up new connections into the world. Inspired by this tradition we also would like to make history in the Lisbon congress, honoring our 30th anniversary, by reaching out to our colleagues from various disciplines, societies and organizations in sharing the vision and commitment of working together in improving cancer care for all cancer patients and their families throughout the world.
Lisbon is the perfect city due to its history and geographical site facing the Atlantic Ocean, its incredible light, old barrios, extensive walking waterfront and scenic sights in its famous seven hills, mild weather, friendly people, delicious gastronomy and fine wines.
It is our great pleasure and honor to welcome you to participate in this endeavor and our congress. On behalf of the local organizing committee I wish you a great congresso and a wonderful time in our lovely city.
